Divine Mercy Sunday was established by Pope John Paul II in 2000, following the canonization of Saint Faustina Kowalska, who received messages from Jesus about His Divine Mercy. The Sunday after Easter was chosen to be a day where Catholics are encouraged to reflect on God's mercy and seek His forgiveness, emphasizing the grace and healing available to all who turn to Him with a repentant heart.
Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska was born August 25, 1905 in Poland. She entered the convent of Our Lady of Mercy at the age of 20. In 1931, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina in a vision. She saw Jesus clothed in a white garment with His right hand raised in blessing. His left hand was pointed toward his Heart, where two large rays poured out, one red and the other white.
Message of Divine Mercy
Jesus to St. Faustina, excerpts from her Diary
“On that day, the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened.” 6991
“Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the signature: Jesus, I trust in You. I promise that the soul that will venerate this image will not perish. I also promise victory over [its] enemies already here on earth, especially at the hour of death. I Myself will defend it as My own glory.” 47-481
To receive the Extraordinary Graces of this Feast, the only conditions are to receive Holy Communion worthily on Divine Mercy Sunday (or the Vigil celebration), by making a good confession beforehand, staying in the state of grace and trusting in His Divine Mercy. A Plenary Indulgence can be obtained by fulfilling the usual conditions.
