Beginning Sunday February 13 Charlie Imbriani PhD, will be giving a series of five lectures on the Second Vatican Council, and its documents. The council also referred to as Vatican II, was the 21st ecumenical council in the history of the Church. It took place at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, in four sessions spanning four years, 1962-1965. It was the first worldwide council that did not condemn any teachings or individuals. It was the first truly pastoral council in Church history, the Council made a sincere and successful effort to reach out to non-Catholic Christians for the first time since the Reformation. During Vatican II, the Church also reached out to Jews and Muslims among others and continues to dialogue with them till this day. The Council defined, clarified, organized, and promulgated its teachings, its purpose, its goals, and its place in the modern world. Early on the council was the victim of some negative Press which soured many of the faithful till this day. There were inuendoes that the Church was altering its long-established doctrine to accommodate modern preferences. These innuendos, however, have lost traction and have been proven false. After 60 years, as the council’s teaching have been examined, studied, and analyzed from just about every scholarly perspective, they prove continuity with the teaching of Sacred Tradition, (oral and written) previous ecumenical councils, and to the earliest sources, the Church Fathers. The Council’s teachings were published in 16 major and minor documents. In these lectures, we will examine the four major Constitutions published by the Council. Come and join us, learn about your Church, and see how fruitful and productive this council was. First Sunday: Introduction to Vatican II 2nd Sunday: Gaudium et Spes - Pastoral Constitution of the Church in the modern world 3rd Sunday: Sacrosanctum Concilium - On the Scared Liturgy 4th Sunday: Lumen Gentium - Dogmatic Constitution on the Church 5th Sunday Dei Verbum - Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation
