Lectors

The General Instruction of the Roman Missal  states that “in the absence of an instituted lector, lay men and women may be deputed to take on this function.  They should be “truly suited…and carefully prepared” to proclaim the Word of God to the gathered assembly.  (GIRM, 101)
 
From the USCCB:  “Readers are encouraged to continually meditate on Sacred Scripture so that their faithful proclamation of the readings at Mass will in turn inspire the faithful to turn to God through His Word.
 
Lector Qualifications

• Practicing member of Good Shepherd parish, attending Mass regularly and in good sacramental standing with the Church so that you can fully participate in the Eucharistic celebration.
• Fully initiated (having received the sacraments of Baptism, Holy Communion, and Confirmation)
• ** Children, participating in a special Children’s Liturgy as a lector, are not required to be Confirmed, but should be Baptized and have received their first Holy Communion.
• If married, you should be validly married in the Church.
• Respectful of the Catholic Church teachings
• Have a love and respect of Sacred Scripture
• Possess the necessary ability and skill to proclaim the Word of God in a clear, dignified, and effective manner.
• Participate in Good Shepherd’s training for lectors.
