Tallahassee currently has 151 Afghans - individuals and 51 families. They helped our military in their country, now we have an opportunity to help them. The International Rescue Committee is busy housing them, getting appropriate paperwork, seeking jobs and supporting them for the first six months.
The IRC is seeking community volunteers for welcoming the refugees in other ways, such as transportation to appointments and trips to the grocery store. The most recent desire is to supply each family unit with one computer so they can connect with their families back home, with the IRC, with English classes online for those who can’t attend in person, bikes for transportation. Beyond these physical needs is the opportunity to get to know people from another culture, to have tea in their home, to see the surprise on their faces when they walk into a Target for the first time, to take them to a pharmacy and help them talk to a pharmacist when their children are sick. You do not have to speak their language. They are learning ours and are at different levels of proficiency. You will be impressed at their efforts. Smiles, gestures and translation apps are always helpful.
If you are interested in how you can help these brothers and sisters of ours adjust to their new lives here in Tallahasssee, please contact Michelle Naiman at naimanfl@aol.com
